Well the old ati x300 pci express is only good for certain things, and i still haven't played half-life 2 because of its limits (half-life 2 causes my pc to crash due to overload), and would love to get a new card for my pc. The sad thing is that when i looked at newegg.com they said a bunch of jumbled up letters and words that don't reflect what you buy at staples with phrases like geforce, and pny, etc. So, with that I leave it up to you to help me decide.

I have found one that i think will suit me. I have 1 gig of ram, and an expansion port for more if needed, and I think I have found one that will work. Let me know what you think.

THE CARD CLICKY!!!!!!!

thats a good card for gaming, HERE is a site where u can compare the performance with other cards, just be aware that this card wont support DX10 in Windows Vista, otherwise its good for XP

That IS a great card and it WILL run lots of stuff at great settings.

But....this is also a nice little deal.

The x1900gt is comparable to the 7900gt from nvidia, and has a very nice price tag. Also, upgrading might be a tad easier since it's ATI and you already have an ATI.

Also don't forget that ATI will be releasing their DX10 cards soon, and nvidia will be releasing their budget DX10 cards. I plan on buying the 8600ultra which is supposed to have 512 mb, 256 bit interface and an 180 dollar price tag. Here is a helpful link that Stormy gave me when I was deciding what to upgrade to.

so your staying stick with ati? GAH! I like it, but its got so many problems with drivers. My old nvidia card in my old gateway never had any driver problems. I LOVE nvidia, but only like ati.

How is that card comparable to the 8600 ultra? Is it about the same, or better?

I'm not necessarily saying stay with ATI. I'm just saying that installing completely new drivers with a different brand card, blah, blah might be tedious, but I don't know for sure because I've never owned an ATI. I am purchasing an 8600ultra when it comes out(if it truly has the 180 price tag) for 2 big reasons.
1. DirectX10 support
2. With those specs, 180 is an incredible deal. 512mb on a card with 128 bit is bad, but if you have 512mb on a 256 bit, it pwnz0rs. Cards like the 7900gtx have those specs and they cost 300+.

As long as you have a pci express slot, it should be compatible.
Oh and btw, what's your power supply? You might need to upgrade that with a new card.

I'm not an uber expert or anything, so get a second opinion, but if the 8600ultra is really 180, it is an incredible deal.

Oh, and don't get me wrong, the 7800gtx you were looking at is an awesome card, but it's a bad time to upgrade right at this moment. The next generation ATI and rest of the geforce 8 series are going to drive current cards WAYYYYYYYY down in cost.

i think i might wait for the 8600 ultra too... sounds too good to be true, but hey its worth a shot right?

How many watts you have? You might have to upgrade for any new card you get.

I've got a 305 watt power supply....i hope i don't need any more.

you will need at least a 500 watt psu to run newer cards

Yea. Unfortunately, that's true. You can get a decent 500w for 40 bucks.

Btw Hawkins, nice computer. I'm jealous. :D

when you find a decent power suply make sure its has at least 30 amps on the +12v rail cause if you dont you can have a unstable computer.Thx I only have this set up because the government owed me 3,000 bucks and I spent like 1,900(I thinks cause I cant remember but I know it was around that price)and I spent the rest fixing up my 83 Mustang GLX

40 bucks ha? well with a dell i'll probably have to order one of their parts....GAH! hopefully not. But thats not alot of money.

thanks for the info. i'll probably go for the way cheaper 8600 ultra rather than spending 300 bucks on one i cant even hook my monitor up to without a special plug.

EDIT:
I found a power supply, but im not sure if it will work or not....
POWER SUPPLY CLICKY

I found another...
NEXT PSU

and another....
OCZ PSU CLICKY

the last two look the best for what i need, but i'm not sure what a good one would be that would fit into my dell wityh the exception of those last two.

Also, you need to know what power pin connector your motherboard has. It can be 20 pin, 20+4 pin, or 24 pin. What Dell system is it? I'm sure I can look it up at the site.

how would the power pin connector his motherboard has cause you hook up the 6 pin connector that is on the power suply

#15 AnonymousFlash

Posted 25 January 2007 - 07:48 PM

No, I mean, his motherboard connector has to match the connector on the power supply. For example, I'm building a new system in March. The motherboard I am buying has a 24pin connector, so I'm getting a power supply with the 24 pin connector.

There are a ton of PSUs that are 20+4 and they work for both.

#17 AnonymousFlash

Posted 25 January 2007 - 10:39 PM

Ah, I was unaware that 20+4 was compatible with both, my bad.

Yup, its a 24pin. I just wanted to check so you wouldn't order one with the wrong connector and have to send it back. :)
