Celeron ew, who was there when you bought that thing?Hey, dont worry. I've got a 2.8ghz Celeron-D, 1024MB of RAM, and a Radeon 9600xt. I get 20-30 fps in BF 1942.I have a 1.53 GHz Compaq presario with AMD athlon xp 1800+ and 512 mb of ram

Also rather then upgrade... just buy a new computer.
Reaosns why buy a new one-
Processor alone can be 200$
2 sticks of ram is another 100 (depending on speed)
thats 300$
New video card 100-300
Worth more to spend 200$(saw a hp celeron 2.4gighurtz for 200$) on a computer
or spend 600$ on a amd athlon 64 with 2 gigs worth of slots and pci express.

First of All, the amount of ram that your system can handle is not determined by your processor. It determined by your motherboard. If you know the make and model of you motherboard you can go to google.com to find the specs and it will tell you there. 1 gig of ram will definately help your performance, however even if you have 1 gig or more, you are still going to have other bottlenecks, e.g. your processor and video card. Right now, you can pick up a Athlon XP 3200+ for like $140, but chances are your motherboard does not support it. What you may want to do instead of getting instant gradification (gosh dern speeling), you may just want to start piecing together your new system. Buying things piece by piece, it would be more worth it in the long run.Does anyone know how much ram an AMD athlon xp 1800+ will support?
Just my 2 and 1/2 cents

I already have 512 ram so i might just add another 512 or 1gb stick
Also have a radeon 9600xt so graphics isnt much of a problem
The only time i get slowdown in cs is when there is alot of people in the same area where i am
So how much ram should i buy

Honestly the cheapest way for better performance for you would be to add another 512 of ram, I wouldn't get more than until you upgrade your other stuff firstI dont have the money right now for a new rig...

How much of a performance difference will the extra 512mb's do? And how many fps should i expect with such an upgrade

You might have to go through them to buy that RAM, otherwise it is possible it will not work.

My sister has a compaq, it only came with 128megs of ram. I finally talked her into upgrading, but it had fricken rdram. It was like almost $200 for 512. But that wasn't because it was proprietary, it just cause they were trying something new and now no one uses RDram. Best bet is to check out their website for specs. Places like Crucial sell oem replacements for cheap and it should work on your compaq. They are pretty good ram too, not top of the line, but good enoughCompaq used to be proprietary...I don't know if they still are or not.

Can you get your resolution to a lower setting and drop some of the graphics setting? That will probably boost your FPS a lot more inexpensively.Ok one last question...im currently seeing my fps on CS:s at low 30's and high 20's, but in a firefight it will go down to low 20's.
How much of a performance difference will the extra 512mb's do? And how many fps should i expect with such an upgrade

yea and if you have things like antialasing on or anastropic filtering, u might want to turn them off. They look pretty but they kill your fps, especially on a lower end systemCan you get your resolution to a lower setting and drop some of the graphics setting? And i noticed, that dropping the res and graphics will actually lower my fps..
Im getting 40+ constantly with high graphics and higher resolution.
