I'm trying to set up my external router to port forward, enabling me to host. I have followed the instructions listed as per the attached link, to date when anyone tries to connect to my ip they get a message saying "server not recognized". I'm going to assume I'm missing a step some where, any suggestions.

Instead of just forwarding ports, try making your computer DMZ.

Enable my DMZ host ip by itself without port forwarding...ok, will try that.
