This is becoming an increasingly bothersome problem. My game has been rather unstable. It crashes to desktop at least 5 times a day. The sound also cuts out from time to time. What could be causing this?

Gremlins.
No, but seriously. When you crash, do you hear a Windows error message? This might mean that you are getting a popup error message, but it disappears after the game closes, so you are unable to read it. Since you do not know when it will crash you, there is no way to force window-mode and then make it appear so you can read it. Hmm. If the sound cuts out then maybe it's a driver issue for that.
Have you recently updated drivers? If not, what is your sound card and video card. You probably will want to update your sound card drivers first, unless the card is ancient and there is no driver upgrade. Even integrated needs to be updated sometimes, that would come from the mobo manufacturer's website.
