Greetings from Shreveport, LA,

First off, let me say I know nothing about running a game server, modding maps or Punk Buster. I drive a Tow Truck and repossess vehicles for a living.

I was wondering if all the map mods make it easier for someone that wants to cheat? Certain Players seem to be able to consistently shoot me in the head with a short burst from an MP40 from half way across a map. These players are always atop the leader board and very difficult to kill one on one. I've seen the same players on other servers with no mods. They are still good, just not that good.

I enjoy playing either way and I'm happy when there are plenty of people playing on your server. I like a lot of the Mods made to many of the maps. Some I do not care for, but not enough to quit playing.

On a side note: I have been playing this game on and off since 2005 or 2006 My O'le Lady hates this game and always seems to come up with new chores for me to do while playing. Or she will want to tell me important stuff while I'm playing this game.

Regards,

Todd

I'll tackle Punkbuster. We used Punkbuster, the majority if not all of our Admin team has high familiarity with Punkbuster.  We've helped and advised others on it's use.

It was a tool, something you can relate too.  Think of it as a wrench.  The box end provided a streaming service to the servers which would block global bans which had to be screened by Punkbuster Admins.

That service ended long ago.   So now you are left with a busted wrench..  just your open end.  The ability to take screenshots from a players perspective.

Newer Operating Systems may not play well with PB so your open end wrench is now stripped.  It only works part of the time.

Why not just keep it in the toolbox anyway?  Well.. hey here comes a player. You need to install this extra thing and a custom repair for it to make it work for us.   A good portion of the players will not do this.  In addition to that Punkbuster does NOT work with the free version of the game released by EA on their Origin service.  For anyone who took advantage of this, you can still log in and redownload Battlefield 1942.

So you choose to block %100 of Origin players. Require other users to download and install Punkbuster and a patch.  To keep...  1/2 of a stripped wrench...   and perhaps hang out a sign that says.  "We haz da best tools" .

Our Sign - " We have the best team "

All I can say is the players you mention, they just are simply, very good. The admins here pay close attention to play on the server. If there is a chance somone is using a hack it is investigated.

If you ever feel someone is hacking, you can post here with thier name and what made you feel they are cheating. Or you can send an admin a private message with the info.

And on the... annoyances while playing.... A good headset and a heavy door lock is all I can suggest..... legally.....

Thanks for the replies.  I'm sure everyone tries to aim for the head. I really don't care if someone is cheating as long as it keeps them playing and coming back to the servers. Just wondering how it works.

When I'm up against one of those good low ping infantry players, I usually aim for the torso. I feel it is easier to hit with my higher ping.

Hi Coke_Stomper,

Have seen you playing on the server for many years now. Thanks for stopping by the forums again.

As others have mentioned, difference in individual players' skills between servers will almost certainly be down to ping.

Posi has explained the PunkBuster aspect of it all.

One thing I wanted to pick up on is what people often envisage a hack to be.  Not because whether someone is hacking is subjective, but because many other first-person shooters have a "lock-on" aimbot/auto-headshot hack. This is simply not the case for BF1942 Multi-Player, regardless of whether the server runs PunkBuster - an auto-headshot/aimbot hack does NOT exist.  Of course, other hacks do exist and anyone found to be using them will be permanently banned from our servers.

Although I haven't really played (nor adminned) on other servers, I have adminned here since 2007 and I can honestly say that our admin team is fantastic: we have great knowledge of the hacks that are available and we will ensure any hackers are removed from the server as quickly as possible.  If a particular long-term player(s) has caught your eye, rest-assured that they have also, at some point, caught our eye.  So, if they are still playing on our server then it means we are confident that they are not running any software to artificially improve their skill.

Hope that helps and see you in game!

if you suspect someone of cheating, there are some code words that seem to be popular.

1. hmm interesting..

2. yeah right!

3. so and so and their magic gun...

4. through sanbags!!  Through walls?

5. special vision

And so many other creative ways to call someone a cheater without getting auto kicked.

^^ Please don't be one of "those" players.

Posi is right, PB doesn't work any longer. Even the old screenshots don't work any more because of the newer OS out there. Fortunately, MoonGamers has been around since 2004...before PB came to the game. We know how to hunt hackers without it, we call it "old school" hunting. It helps when players post in here when they suspect a player. It doesn't help when players "call out" other players in the server. IF the player IS hacking, you just gave them a reason to keep doing it...they love that stuff. If they're not, you're making all other players on the server believe that an innocent player is hacking.

We do take accusations made here in the forum seriously. We create a PTW (Player To Watch) on them in the admin forum, and if they are hacking they will be caught. It just won't happen right away.

There are also things that happen on the server that make you think someone is hacking when it's really just a game glitch. Some examples:

- Bad clipping: this is when the player seems to shoot through a wall. In reality, it's call bad clipping, or when the wall appears there but there is nothing "solid" in the game to prevent being shot.

- Hit boxes: when you dive behind a sandbag and you get shot anyway...it's because the "hit box" on you is not always directly on you, but instead follows your on screen character. So, when the enemy shoots you and you dive behind the sandbag, the hit box is actually still available to be hit by the enemy.

- Unlimited ammo sound: this is when a player picks up a tommy that another player dropped. The game glitches and makes it sound like they are constantly shooting without stopping or reloading. The player who picked up the tommy cannot hear it but everyone else can. This can help an enemy to locate you, so if you think they're mapping it's more likely they just followed your sound. To prevent this from happening, if you pick up a tommy switch out immediately to the pistol and then back, and the sound stops.

- Reload glitch: this is when your character reloads, usually while another player is shooting at you. Annoying, but you can actually "shoot through" it while the visual is reloading. You will even see regs when you do this. Just continue to play as if the visual wasn't reloading and shoot your opponent the best you can without a reticle to guide your aim.

Finally to answer your query, modding maps the way we do doesn't give anyone an advantage over another. There are some serverside mods that can provide illegal benefits to the modder, who knows he put them there, but we don't do that. We run as honest of a server as we can.

I hope this helps!

I might've been one of those players who shoot MP40s from a long distance away.

I've had a lot of practice (almost 15 years to be exact) and I have a good ping now. The MP40 is very good at shooting across long distances - much more so than the Thompson. Very little bullet spread and with a bit of crouching, it works wonders. The downside is it does not do that much damage but a player who knows what s/he's doing can take you down pretty quickly, even from a distance.

Thanks Guys,

I would never accuse anyone of cheating, even if I thought they were. I get tunnel vision sometimes that leaves me vulnerable to getting shot. The only Hack / Mod I thought might be in play is the cross hairs staying compact, but you guys cleared all that up for me. I got a headset last week and can now hear thing in game that I never could before. Like footsteps, swimmers, rapid gunfire in the distance and a lot of funky sounds in the Secret Weapons expansion pack.

See Y'all out there...
