I am unable to play without being disconnected from the server every 3-5 minutes. I don't think I've yet played a game all the way from beginning to end. Any ideas?

Re-applying the gamespy patch can sometimes repair an install.

If it is a connectivity issue, running a trace to the server will show the bottleneck.

run  - >  tracert 173.208.17.147

Does it say disconnected from server or does bf1942 crash to desktop?

Have you upgraded or changed your operating system recently?  When I upgraded to Windows 7, I had to set the Compatibility Mode to Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5) to keep it from happening (though it wasn't crashing back to the desktop as often as every 3-5 minutes).  If you are just being disconnected instead of the game itself crashing then the trouble lies elsewhere.

Yes indeed if Windows 7 then set to compat mode NT4.0 is the key....

I have windows 10 which is very unfriendly to gaming. It doesn't offer nt4.0 it gives xp service packs 2 & 3, 98/me, 95, vista and vista service packs 1&2, windows 7 & 8

I would try both compatibility for XP SP2 and SP3 and see which is more stable for you.  As above, that will only prevent game crashes not disconnects which will be a network/connectivity issue.

It's not a problem of the game crashing to desktop. It's just getting disconnected from the server back to the server selection screen.

Try a tracert as per Posi's post above.

You could also try connecting by ethernet if you're currently using a wireless connection.

I had a similar issue some months ago. I had no problems surfing the web or watching videos etc. , but a huge amount of disconnects from the server. It turned out that my router was the issue. Almost no more issues after I got a new one.

I think it's a clash between teamspeak and bf1942. I played the last two days with teamspeak off and had no problem whatsoever.

possibly your sound card?  or you have band width usage maxed on both
