I got a new gaming laptop, and I installed BF1942 and BF2 on it. Problem is they lack widescreen support by default and stretch the image to fit the screen. My preferred resolution is 1900x1200 but 1680x1050 or 1280x768 will work as well. Is there any way to properly set BF1/BF2 for widescreen, or alternatively, is there a way to prevent them from stretching the image (albeit the fact that this will produce black areas on both sides of the unused parts of the screen)? Any input will be appreciated, thanks.

To get widescreen in BF1942 even with the newest patch, do this:
Replace the line:
game.setGameDisplayMode 800 600 32 0
With:
game.setGameDisplayMode 1680 1050 32 60
In the Following Files:
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Default\VideoCustom.con
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Default\Video.con
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Custom\VideoCustom.con
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Custom\Video.con
Add the line:
renderer.fieldOfView 1.1
To the Following File:
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\VideoDefault.con
Then set both of those sets of files to read-only.
The game interface isn't widescreen, but once you get into the game it pops out to 1680x1050 goodness, with the UI stretched to match the screen size.

I run BF1 in wide with no stretching as per the above edits.
Hope this helps.

Set the field of view to 1.34 or so, that would work best with the least warping.

Is it just me or does the native widescreen support for steam games stretch the edges similar to 4:3 Expanded view on an HDTV for 4:3 television and is not true widescreen? Center is ok but edges are streched. My steam games seem that way.

Realistically, you can change the field of view to anything.

Danke. I got the resolution to go up although the people and vehicles still look a bit fat lol.
