To uninstall go to Add/Remove Programs, select Nvidia drivers and select to only remove the video/display drivers, reboot. Once back in Windows if the Found new hardware wizard pops up cancel it, and then run the installer that you downloaded.
Out of curiosity is the memory error "memory not sane"? If so then that will require an update of your motherboard drivers, particularly the SATA drivers.
Also you wouldn't happen to be running RivaTuner would you?

"BF2142 Memory error.
memory.dll: all aloc attempts failed for size 8886502"
... and then you have the option of canceling, trying again and continue. One question I have though, is how do I figure out which drivers I have? I have done this process two times previously and landed with a buttload of problems on both occations, so I just want to make sure I actually have old drivers (the computer is fairly new) before I proceed.
What is RivaTuner?
EDIT: I appear to have the driver version 7.15.11.5816. Is that old?

Anyway for me and my lowly 7600GT the 158.45 have been the best so far (you don't say 64 or 32 bit so here is both),
http://downloads.gur...ad.php?det=1651 - 32 bit
http://downloads.gur...ad.php?det=1652 - 64 bit
Maybe give them a try. If they don't solve the problem or the performance isn't quite there try either the 163.11 or 162.50,
http://downloads.gur...nload.php?id=32
both can be found there (as well as just about every Vista driver released to date).
What is RivaTuner?

Also would be a good idea if you haven't done so yet to update your DirectX,
http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en
will update all DX9 and DX 10 files to the latest (and add in those DX 9 that may be missing for DX 9 games to run properly).

Ok, so I download the drivers, save them, lets say, at the desctop to access them easily, uninstall my current drivers, reboot, and then install the new ones?
Im able to locate the video card in some über advanced place on the computer. When I click on the "drivers" tab I have a few buttons to choose from; "Driver details", "update drivers" (tried that one. didnt work), "Roll drivers back", "deactivate" and "uninstall". Is that where I uninstall the drivers?

I uninstall them through control panel / add-remove programs , you have nvidia video drivers as program, nvidia is very good with driver updates, you should check for new versions and what is resolved in monthly basis
Monthly? This is Nvidia we're talking about here not ATI. ATI does release a new driver once a month, Nvidia releases a new driver whenever the spirit moves them. I have seen them go once per month, nothing for a couple of months (occasional beta) once per week, and even seen as many as 3 or 4 drivers released in a week.
One thing with Nvidia and Vista drivers Mawa, don't rely on Nvidia's site for finding new(er) drivers, go to someplace like here,
http://forums.guru3d.com/index.php
one of the better hardware sites for keeping up with what Nvidia is doing, as well as how the latest drivers are working for others.
Also just in case you missed it,
