The past several days, my ping has unexpectedly jumped a good 30ms for no good reason. For example, I usually ping about 70 or so on Moongamers and now I ping a steady 100. Same goes for any server - it has jumped. These are NOT ping spikes, but like I said, a steady ping.

So, of course I checked to make sure I did not have anything running in the background and that all looks fine. I then decided to open up the command prompt and do a few ping commands and run a few tracerts. When I would ping a domain or IP, I would get the same ping jump. So, I know it is not just the game or some weird issue like that. However, when I did a tracert, the hop between 1 and 2 was about 51ms... that hop should not be over 10ms.

My question to you guys is this: is it even worth contacting my ISP over? It has to be something on their end, right? Resetting the router has also done no good and I fear that is what they are going to tell me to do.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Greg, you need to do a traceroute and document your times to the server. That will tell you where the extra 30ms is coming from. I ran into a similar problem last year and it was someones server on the way to the game server. When you have that info you can post it here for help or you can contact your ISP and put in a trouble call.

2. 48 ms 47 ms 46 ms ppp-70-128-111-254.dsl.tulsok.swbell.net [70.128.111.254] is where you need to concentrate.
This tells my uneducated brain you need to double check your equipment and or press your ISP for answers.

Yep its your end that caused your higher ping.
Make sure to power cycle (turn off everything in the network) and see if that clears things up. If you still have problems ask for a tech to come check your lines.

What ever the cause its close to your and your network. I do not know how many other PCs you have connected but you may want to disconnect them one by one. If one has a viral infection it can cause this as well by packet overload. Many things that you can check on your end to make sure that something there is not the cause. The PC you traced from seems to be ok .
