To celebrate our 10th anniversary and two millionth Premium member, we are giving away Battlefield 1942 for free! Relive if it you’re an old-time fan. See where it all started if you’re new to the series. You can download Battlefield 1942 right now on Origin at: http://origin.com/demos and learn more about this DICE classic here: http://blogs.battlef...f1942-for-free/

Source: http://battlelog.bat...54787641411871/

There are some things you need to know. The most important one is that you CANNOT use this to play with people that have the disc-based version....

Q: Can I play online against players who have the original disc-based version?
A: No. This Origin digital download version can only be played against other players who are using the same version. But since it’s free for everyone, everyone can download their own copy of the game. This version of the game will only show applicable (new) servers in the server browser.

And no this does not include the expansion packs.

There will also be NO admins, NO player-based map rotations, and NO modded servers. They will be as nekkid and vanilla as when EA put it out.

It's up to you, but I would rather play with my friends than on some noob-filled, unmanaged server that doesn't have enough equipment for the number of players it will be hosting.

You can create a server with Origin version...

Q: Can I run a server for the game?
A: Yes, you can easily run a server from the front end menu within the game client. This server will be visible to all other players via the server browser.

Q: Can I run a dedicated server for the game?
A: Yes, you can run a dedicated server by running the file “DedicatedServer.exe”. It is located in the folder where you installed Battlefield 1942 through Origin. This will present you with all available settings, maps and modes for you to customize before pressing the button “launch server”. This server will be visible to all other players via the server browser.

And you can install some of the mods to work with it...

Q: Can I use this version of the game together with old Battlefield 1942 mods?
A: This is untested and we cannot guarantee any mod functionality. Sporadic testing leads us to believe that Desert Combat 0.7 works, as well as Eve of Destruction 2.5. For more discussion on popular mods, head to the new Battlelog forums we have set up specifically for this release of Battlefield 1942. Please share your findings on which mods work and which do not.

I don't think this will hurt our servers any (or much at least) because those people are going to be using the disc version.
I haven't tried it yet but I think the game settings tweaks, like to run unsupported resolutions, should still work as well.
I do wonder about PunkBuster though and how that works.

One of the DICE devs on reddit was promoting the use of Desert Combat on it.

Exciting stuff :)

This is good for the game, maybe at some point who enjoy 1942 will later get the CD games and move
to play here or any other servers still running.

About the "NO admins, NO player-based map rotations, and NO modded servers. They will be as nekkid and vanilla as when EA put it out." Old gamers can have a taste of what we experienced when we started to play, again.

Lets hope this will make at mid term new players join MG servers (after that get the original game offcourse)

Its a real shame this version isn't compatible with the retail(disks) version. <_<
This is generating some buzz on several boards and gaming sites.
(I came in today to post about it but wolf beat me to it)
While I'm sure it would create all sorts of headaches for Admins, the payoff
in terms of player-base might have been well worth it.

Great find and share ! I see it it as good for the game as well , BF needs , steam or sigh origin. Actually, after the 1943 fiasco.. It is the least they can do, and it is late in the coming.

Change the name on your current shortcut on the desktop before installing the Origin version and your good to go. Thats the only issue is shortcut overwrite all else is fine.

If you already have the disc version they why bother with this?
This is more for people that don't have the game, can't find their disc/cdkey, or even up until now have been pirating the game.

also, "FREE DOWNLOAD EXPIRES MARCH 1, 2013."
you can still play it after that if you've already downloaded it.
(According to folks over at the EA Answer HQ)

If Monkey said it..then to do it ! I run game from cd run.exe so i guess won´t afect me then

I am quite worried that this free stuff will afect our loved MG 1942 TDM server, I really hope it does not.

I miss so much when 1942 was a caos of noobs, no admins, map votes etc etc that will give a try at origin.

The server should be a launching ground for us to encourage Origin players to go out and find the game and play on a modded server. Opportunities abound with this announcement and might give the "hardcore" disc based crew a much needed adrenaline shot.

They are playing on an exact copy of our current 1.61 (TDM) server. All mods and toys for 64 players were placed on the server before it was fired up :)

No issues yet on dual install , I hook ed it up last night on two boxes ...

Notes : No luck switching out profiles ( copy and paste from one folder two another )

So.. I don't know about those running custom resolutions , Once I modified files It sent game to black screen in Origin..

Note 2 : To fix it I used Origin's repair option .. it reverts the install , works

For what it's worth.. No luck running two copies of game simultaneously.. If cd-version is running origin will not launch 42.

Worth checking out -

Wikipedia has updated 1942's entry .. Curiously the 5th of November was used as the shall we say 're-release ' date.

and for battlefield fans , I think we will all remember the fifth of November.

EA has done something for the game that the player base was not capable of doing on it's own. Kudos to them and a smart smart business move on their part.
