I shutdown my desktop Dell comp(Win7) everynight using the icon in the extreme bottom left corner and selecting "shutdown". I then usually shutdown the powerstrip that provides power to the comp in case of overnight storm etc. But at times I will forget to turn off the powerstrip and the next morning my comp is on. I not sure how much later it comes on, but its more than an hour or so after I leave it.

I have no idea of any program on my comp that would make the computer restart on its own. Any ideas ?

Power settings. I believe there might be some that have a force computer on option?
This could be from a networked computer trigger or router trigger.
Kinda like how you choose if mouse or keyboard being touched turns it on or not except more options.
Shutdown may be set to a sleep mode setting rather then a full on shutdown?

Or the fun possibility.
Someone is turning your computer on or your sleep walking.

My power setting is on "shutdown" and I can't find anything else that would effect it. :(

BIOS Setting maybe? I believe there is a setting in BIOS Power Options menu "Wake on LAN" if "enabled" may wake your computer up after you shut it down? Drove my brother crazy a year ago with a similar issue. His computer was not 100% shutting down even though he was hitting shutdown. Computer was waking up with that option enabled. I'm no expert of course. Just remember something similar.

I did a quick google search for "wake on lan" and found this........WOL ONLY works for Ethernet (i.e. hard-wired) connections, NOT Wireless

I've been using a wireless connection, so I don't think thats the problem. Even if it is, after reading about how to change the setting I've decided to leave well enough alone and just make sure I turn off my power strip. Thanks for the info though.

How about a weak CMOS battery or corruption in the CMOS settings.

Do you REALLY expect me to know wtf your talking about, let alone know how to check it ?!?!?!?
Thanks, but if the problem is something like that, I'll live with it. :D

p.s. The Dell computer was purchased new a year or so ago if that makes any difference.
